Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham said that if the Islamic Republic continues its “provocative” behavior, US President Donald Trump should resume military strikes and finish the Iranian regime off.
The Financial Times reported on Saturday, May 1, that the United States must “open the strait” to break the current stalemate, and that this would require more intense military action.
“We have the ability to increase shipping traffic,” Graham told the publication on Thursday, May 1, adding that the US must take a series of steps to resume shipping and put pressure on the Islamic Republic.
Referring to Iran’s oil export hubs on Kharg Island, he said: “I hope the naval blockade and warning the Islamic Republic about the possibility of an operation on Kharg Island will be effective, otherwise we must stand up to this regime and not let it blackmail the world.”
Graham also said: “I hope that one day the Iranian people will be able to regain their freedom, but my goal is to make sure that the regime’s behavior changes. If that can be done diplomatically, great; if that has to be done through other means, so be it.”
Graham had previously told the Financial Times in January, before the war began, “It’s hard for me to imagine that there is a viable solution other than regime change.”
