Republican Senator Lindsey Graham welcomed President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a trip by a US negotiating team to Pakistan, saying that “short-term military action” may be necessary to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Graham wrote in a message on X Network that Trump’s decision to cancel the trip by Steve Whitaker and Jared Kushner was “very wise.” He wrote that the US president had taken “big steps” to reach a diplomatic solution with Iran, but the Islamic Republic’s response to these steps was “continued attacks on international shipping and provocative actions.”
Lindsey Graham went on to emphasize that the top priority for the US and the world should be “establishing firm control over the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.” He added: “To achieve this goal, US military intervention may be required in the short term.”
The US senator also called for the continuation of the blockade of Iranian ports, saying it must be ensured that Iran “does not return to the previous situation.”
